The construction of the solar plant at the Groot-Brakrivier Wastewater Treatment Works is fully underway. This project forms part of Phase 2 of the Municipality’s renewable energy program. Once completed, the facility will consist of a 2.4 megavolt Battery Energy Storage System. The system is to improve electricity supply to the Great Brak River, Klein Brak River and Sandhoogte Water Treatment Works. The system will ensure operational continuity during power outages and supply instability, ensuring uninterrupted water purification and wastewater treatment.
The total project value is R143m, which the council approved during the 2022 and 2023 load shedding crisis, recognising the urgent need to protect critical water and wastewater infrastructure from the impacts of ongoing electrical interruptions.
This project, together with the Hartenbos Solar Plant, reflects the Municipality’s long term commitment to sustainable infrastructure development, reduced reliance on the national grid, and the continued delivery of reliable basic services to its residents.
